Tour description

Detailed itinerary

We start by picking up the participants at their accommodation with our tourist transport, to transfer them to Sencca in a trip of approximately 30 minutes to the upper part of Cusco. There, our guide will provide the necessary instructions to begin the adventure. The tour begins on a wide road for 30 minutes until we reach our first point: the Gods’ Dwelling.

Once there, we will explore the incredible handmade sculptures that measure more than 8 meters, with enough time to take photos and videos. Afterwards, we will return to our ATVs for a journey of approximately 20 minutes to the colonial aqueduct called “fortress”, a stone structure in the form of Roman-style arches dating from the 14th century (year 1570).

We will continue on the ATVs for 1 hour and 20 minutes until we reach Piuray Lagoon, where we will have time to enjoy the place and listen to some of its myths and legends. Finally, we will return along the same path to the Poroy viewpoint, from where we will contemplate the snow-capped mountains of Cusco, and then return to the city, thus ending our tour.

Gods’ Dwelling: Apukunaq Tianan

Cultural attraction

“Apukunaq Tianan” comes from Quechua and means “The Dwelling of the Gods”, referring to the sculptures of Andean and Inca deities. This relatively recent tourist attraction is located 8 km from Cusco, in the district of Poroy, Sencca sector, at an altitude of 3,850 meters above sea level. The site is open from Monday to Sunday from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, with the dry season (April to October) being the best time to visit.

Main works and their meaning

  • The Puma: Symbol of the earthly world or Kay pacha.
  • La Pachamama: Reference to the earth and source of food.
  • The Three-Dimensional Door: Considered a communication gate between the world of the living and the dead.
  • The Andean Man: Represents Manco Cápac, first son of the Sun.
  • The Jungle Man: Illustrates the trade between the Incas and inhabitants of the Amazon.

Piuray Lagoon: Characteristics

Natural heritage

Piuray Lagoon is one of the most important water sources in Cusco, supplying 42% of the city’s drinking water. Located in the town of Chinchero, 31 km from Cusco, it has an altitude of 3,689 meters above sea level. Its characteristics include:

  • Perimeter of approximately 8,750 meters.
  • Depth between 20 and 50 meters.
  • Water temperature of 0° Celsius.
  • View of the snow-capped mountains of Soray, Verónica, and Salkantay.
  • Ideal for kayaking, stand up paddle, cycling, hiking, or ATVs.
  • Cold climate with temperatures between 18°C during the day and -5°C at night.

Legends of Piuray Lagoon

Local culture

One legend tells that Inti (sun god) asked his children to accompany him in his sunset. By doing so, they were transformed into lagoons. The son who went farthest formed the Huaypo lagoon, while the daughter who was delayed became the Piuray lagoon, so they are called twin brothers.

Another legend tells that an old man arrived hungry and cold at a wedding, but the attendees despised him. Only one woman took pity on him, and the old man warned her to climb the mountain without looking back. Upon hearing that the town would be flooded, the woman turned around and turned into stone, her gaze immortalized in the lagoon.
