Maras and its history

In the main square of the town of Maras, there is a monument with a set of sculptures representing a peasant couple and a mule (pack animal), referring to the agricultural and livestock activities carried out in this site. The pedestal of this monument contains images of the community’s tourist attractions: the salt mines of Maras and the terraces of Moray.

Moray – Inca agricultural laboratory

Located west of the town of Maras, at 3500 meters above sea level, these are agricultural terraces built in the form of gigantic concentric circles. The largest hole has a depth of 150 m and the average height of the platforms is 1.80 m.

According to historians, these constructions constituted an important agricultural laboratory of the Inca empire. Since its platforms are built with their respective irrigation channels and each one creates a different microclimate (with a variation of 1 °C per platform), they allowed the cultivation of more than 250 plant species.

Salt mines of Maras

To the northwest of this town are the famous salt mines of Maras. You can reach them on foot by a bridle path, by bicycle, or by car/quad on a paved road. These salt mines are also known simply as “salt mines”.

They are formed by about 3000 small wells, each with an approximate area of about 5 m². In times of drought, these wells are filled with salt water from a natural spring above them. When the water evaporates, the salt crystallizes.

The wells are passed down by inheritance from grandparents to grandchildren, therefore, they cannot be sold. Maras salt is considered better than sea salt and even better than Himalayan salt. There are only four sites worldwide where you can get pink salt, and Maras is one of them.

The best time to visit, according to community members, is during the first months of the year, between January and February, when the fields are full of vegetation.
